History of Akshardham Temple, Delhi

The Akshardham Temple was inaugurated on 6 November 2005 by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The construction of this temple started on 8 November 2000 and was completed on 6 November 2005, thus it took 5 years to build this temple. This temple was built by BAPS (Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Sanstha) in memory of Jyotirdhar Swami Narayan. More than 11000 artisans and the popular scriptural masters of the country have contributed to making this temple.

This temple was listed on Guinness World Records in 2007 as the largest Hindu pilgrimage site in the world. The greatest excitement among the people was on the day when the name of a Hindu religious temple was included in the Guinness World Records for the first time.

Who is Swami Narayana?

Swami Narayan was a great man who founded the Swami Narayan Samaj. His devotees considered Swami Narayan ji as the form of God. Swami Narayan Ji gave a new direction to the world through his miracles. Similarly, there was also Mahatma Gautam Buddha, whom people considered to be the embodiment of God.


Swami Narayana Ji was born in 1837 in Chhapiya village, Uttar Pradesh. You can read about the miracles of Swami Narayana Ji in Bhagavata Purana and Skanda Purana. In childhood, Swami Narayana Ji was named Ghanshyam.

Swami Narayana Ji was born on the same date as the birth of Lord Rama. After that, he was named Ghanshyam. After gaining knowledge from the Ved Purana, he left his home. Then he started to give a new way to the world. He had travelled all over India in just 7 years.


Then he spread his knowledge all over India. In this way, Swami Narayana Ji became very popular among the people. He also started sharing knowledge with the Pandits. Seeing this, he benefited people with his miracles all over India and he became a god. Today where Akshardham Temple was built. Swami Narayana was living here in the last days of his life.
