India Gate looks like a huge beautiful door. Below this, on the memorial made of black marble, a lamp named Amar Jyoti Jawan keeps burning for 24 hours. This lamp has been burning since 1971, which is never allowed to be extinguished. A gun and a military helmet have been installed in memory of the soldiers martyred in the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

What is India Gate?

There is another small gate behind the India Gate, initially under it was a statue of King George Five. After independence, it was established in the Coronation Park in Nirankari Maidan. History of India Gate, Delhi

Earlier India Gate was also known as Kings Way and All India War Memorial. India Gate was built to pay tribute to the more than 70,000 soldiers who were martyred in the First World War. In this, you can also read the names of the soldiers who were martyred in the Anglo-Afghan War on 6 May 1919.

Mainly yellow and red stones and granite were used to construct the India Gate. These stones were brought from Bharatpur in Rajasthan. You can notice that the India Gate is built in the centre of Delhi.

Who Built India Gate, Delhi?

Edwin Lutyens was entrusted with the task of building the India Gate. Edwin Lutyens was a famous architect of England. He was known for constructing the building in his traditional style. It was inaugurated by Lord Irwin, the Viceroy of India.

The construction of the India Gate was started on 10 February 1921 and was completed on 12 February 1931. If seen, it took a total of 10 years to build. Its design was taken from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
